Compost

Dark brown, crumbly, and nutritious are the adjectives that describe a good compost. But what is compost?

Organic material such as green waste, kitchen waste and the like are collected in a bin or on a pile. With the help of bacteria, animals and fungi, the waste is turned into precious soil, which is not only very rich in nutrients, but also stores large amounts of water and is full of essential soil organisms. Thus, compost forms a cornerstone for any good soil.

On our farm we are also composting a lot. Cut grass, sheep dung and other waste are processed into fertilizer for the nursery and vegetable plots. We create rows and piles of compost. As moisture is required for the composting process, they are watered regularly. After a short time, a noticeable heat develops in the piles and rows. To ensure that everything is composted evenly, the piles are turned every few weeks. Depending on the outside temperature and the starting material, the compost can be used after six weeks at the earliest.
